Remarkable Flotation Treatment Technology

Suspended Air Flotation technology inserts high air content bubbles into liquid waste. Bubbles inserted are externally generated and covered in a chemical film to attach to flocculated waste.

Typical sewage treatment includes the use of DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation). This type of treatment involves the inoculation of waste waters with dissolved air. These air bubbles attach to solid wastes and oils in order to have them rise to the surface and then be skimmed off. This clarification process has now been improved upon by the advent of SAF technology.

SAF stands for Suspended Air Flotation and has been developed by Heron Innovators. This technology uses bubbles that have an electrically-charged film surrounding the air. This film allows the bubbles to adhere to more particles and smaller particles than what is typically seen in DAF. The units are smaller and use less energy to operate as well. The floating waste has an almost gelatin-like appearance as it floats on top of the water. Since it clarifies the water more efficiently, most of the usable water can be drained from the bottom of the tank by gravity and the film, with bubbles still intact and holding the isolated wastes, can be skimmed off after. The more efficient operation makes this a more cost effective solution than your run of the mill DAF system.

Current DAF systems can be modified to run as an SAF. Retrofitting your DAF system with SAF features such as a frother. You will find that the SAF retrofit will require much less start-up time and less horsepower to complete the job in a much more efficient manner. Complete set-up diagrams are available on the company's website.

Heron has a pilot trailer to test the methods at your location to help you to decide whether or not the SAF technology is right for your location's sewage treatment needs. This method has been successful in isolating difficult to capture algae from waste ponds. DAF has a hard time getting that job done. In fact Humboldt State University studies done by Patrick Wiley have shown that SAF treated wastes surface faster than those treated by traditional DAF.
